Understand
The city was annexed by the Assyrians in 856 BC and later prospered under the rule of the Seleucids who made it the chief station on their main road between Antioch and Seleucia on the Tigris. In the third century, the city was one of the great cities of Roman Syria until it fell into ruins after the collapse of the Roman Empire. The Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid restored Manbij at the end of the 8th century.
Manbij have been occupied by several different factions during the Syrian civil war. On December 9, 2024 it came under the control of the Syrian transitional government.

- 1 Qal'at Najm (قلعة نجم). Impressive castle next to the Euphrates river. The current building was constructed during the 12the century. However the site has been active since at least 7th century CE.
